The true-crime magazine is no longer as popular as it was – in many ways, the new wave of women’s magazines like Take a Break offered the same sort of sensationalist stories (just look at the headlines splashed across the covers of most magazines in the women’s section of newsagents and supermarkets) in a more respectable – and more hypocritical – package. Presumably, these magazines spoke to the sort of fantasies and a desire to confront taboo ideas that went unspoken in polite society. The unspoken truth of the true detective magazine is that the main audience for these sensationalised tales of rape and torture, marketed with luridly sexually violent imagery, were – indeed, still are – women. By the 1970s and into the 1980s, the covers were often thinly disguised bondage shoots, yet these magazines remained a mid-shelf staple of drug stores and newsagents, while arguably more wholesome magazines like Playboy were either banished to the top shelf or banned entirely. But by the late 1960s, the style had changed to take advantage of loosening public morals, and increasingly featured photoshoots in which women in varying states of undress were terrorised by masked ruffians, while the headlines became ever more outrageous – the crimes in question were increasingly sexual, with rape and kidnapping competing with murder in the outrages stakes. The golden age of the true-crime magazine – the 1940s and 1950s – featuring impressive, classic cover art from a variety of artists, very much in the style of pulp novels of the era. These are magazines that are a long way from the more respectable and considered true-crime writing, eschewing any detailed analysis of cases in favour of lurid detail and a description of events that often has only a passing relationship with the facts. True crime magazines have been around almost as long as mass-market publishing, feeding an insatiable public desire for sensationalism. The true-crime magazine’s grubbiest era, when lurid photoshoots and outrageous headlines grabbed an eager – and mostly female – audience. Children who are able to quickly and instantly recognize sight words are more likely to become more fluent readers who read at a good speed because they are not stopping to try to decode every word. As a result, children must learn to recognize these words automatically, or at first sight. Most sight words cannot be decoded or sounded out, and they are also difficult to represent with a picture. These sounds usually follow basic spelling rules or phonetic principles, but there are some words that did not follow rules. When we teach children to read, we are basically helping them to crack a code. Children learn to hear and say the sounds of the alphabet and then how to blend those sounds to make words. One critical skill that children need in order to build solid foundational reading skills is sight word recognition. How do you work on sight words at home? Tell us about it on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page.No matter whether kindergarten children will be learning in person, online, or a hybrid of the two, parents and teachers are still focused on ensuring their emerging readers develop a love for reading while learning to read effectively and efficiently. If she has trouble with the list, do not add more words until she can read them without trouble. Have your child read the whole list every mealtime. Start with two words, adding a new one daily. Make a word wall with a large piece of butcher paper. The person with the most cards when they are all turned over wins. Take turns flipping over the cards and reading the words. Using index cards, write out pairs of sight words and place them facedown on a table. Repeat, challenging him to break his own record. He gets one point for every correct word. At the end of the two minutes, have him read the list to you. Set the timer and give your child two minutes to find as many sight words as he can. Write sight words on index cards, and hide them around the house. Here is a simple post from that shows you how. You can find many different commercial sight-word bingo games, or you can make your own. Using these lists, try out some of these simple sight-word activities at home. If you aren't sure which words to work on with your children, you can check with their classroom teacher or find the Dolch word lists here. Of all the various reading strategies, I find working on sight words to be the easiest for parents to get involved in. So now that we know what they are, why they are important, and what they can do, we need to figure out how parents can help. Sight-word knowledge provides a scaffold of understanding and confidence for new readers who need to use all the other tools in their tool box to complete the job at hand: reading with understanding. One of my educational philosophies is to build children's confidence up and then present an attainable challenge. There is more to why sight words are important than just simply the mechanics of reading they are also fantastic confidence boosters. They are also able to understand the majority of the text if those decoding skills fail. It allows kids to free up cognitive resources so they can focus on the tougher words that require strong decoding skills. Working hard to learn these words by sight (memorizing) pays off. On the flip side, the wonderful thing about these words being so common is that children learn them easily with repetition because they are usually words that they already have in their everyday vocabulary. Can you illustrate "is" or "it?" Me neither. They are often also difficult to illustrate, so children can't use illustrations in picture books to make a deeper connection to these words. But many of the words also defy standard phonetic conventions, meaning they are impossible to sound out. You might think that these words are so common that kids would just learn them organically through reading and other everyday print. Some of the words cannot be decoded using conventional strategies so memorizing them until they are known by sight is beneficial. They are a list of 220 words that are used so often in print that together they make up an estimated 75% of all words used in books. Edward William Dolch first compiled the full list and broke it down into five levels for children to learn by sight. Just to confuse you, when you see lists of sight words what you are usually seeing are lists of high frequency words or Dolch Words. That's not usually how the term is used, though. His sight words are the words that he can already recognize by sight without using any specific strategies. Well for that you need the nearest filter on both the minFilter and magFilter and using as the linear filter would lead to blurring between colours as seen in the car image above on the left. Pixel art is all about hard lines between different colours, there is no blurring between the colours which is what you want. So why do we have 2 texture filter parameters? Well, let’s take a pixel art game as an example. What is the difference between the minFilter and magFilter? This is simply when a texture is being rendered larger, OpenGl will use the filter set in magFilter (Magnification Filter) and when the texture is being rendered smaller, it will use the minFilter(minification Filter). Whereas the nearest filter keeps the detail of the grass and road but makes the lines appear jagged. The important thing to notice between these 2 images is that using the MipMapLinerNearest filter makes lines still appear smoothe but loses detail in the finer areas such as the road or grass. The image on the left uses a MipMapLinerNearest filter for the minFilter and on the right is a standard Nearest minFilter. As you can see there is quite a difference. As an example, I have used a picture of my old car which is 4032px by 3024px and is being squished into a 378px by 672px screen. Using the wrong texture filter will not only make your application look worse but could also severely increase processing time. However, when we only increase the image by a small amount our perfectly preportioned rainbow now has more red, green and pink compared to other pixels. When we double the size it looks good because the proportions match the original image. This process of choosing what colour is rendered from the texture is whats known as the texture filter.Ībove you can see what happens to the pixels when we enlarge an image with the texture filter set to nearest. In the image, you can see that 4 of the colours from the top image(original texture) have disappeared in the bottom texture(rendered output) because OpenGL has taken a single pixels colour information and that pixel was the one nearest the point being drawn. The example below shows what happens to an 8 pixel image when it is rendered smaller with the nearest filter. The default texture filter for a texture is nearest-nearest, which means that when a texture is rendered larger or smaller than it is, each pixel of the rendered image will take the pixel closest to the point being rendered. One filter for rendering the texture bigger than it is and one for rendering smaller than it is. There will be 2 filters defined for each texture. A texture filter is an openGL process for taking pixel information from a texture for rendering. Morton of Morton's Minstrels performed a song entitled "Rock and Roll" as part of a repertoire of comic songs at a concert at the Theatre Royal in Victoria, British Columbia. By that time, the specific phrase "rocking and rolling" was also used by African Americans in spirituals with a religious connotation. Myers at about the same time, and Gus Reed in 1908. The hymn "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep", with words written in the 1830s by Emma Willard and tune by Joseph Philip Knight, was recorded several times around the start of the 20th century by the Original Bison City Quartet before 1894, the Standard Quartette in 1895, John W. Examples include an 1821 reference, ". prevent her from rocking and rolling .", and an 1835 reference to a ship ". rocking and rolling on both beam-ends". The alliterative phrase "rocking and rolling" originally was used by mariners at least as early as the 17th century to describe the combined "rocking" ( fore and aft) and "rolling" (side to side) motion of a ship on the ocean. The term "rock and roll" Early usage of the phrase Various recordings that date back to the 1940s have been named as the first rock and roll record, or at least as precursors of the music. įreed was the first radio disc jockey and concert producer who frequently played and promoted rock and roll, including songs by black artists that were considered to be R&B. the sexual component had been dialled down enough that it simply became an acceptable term for dancing". As a 2018 BBC article explained, "by the time DJ Alan Freed started using the term to describe. In 1951, Cleveland-based disc jockey Alan Freed began playing this music style while popularizing the term "rock and roll" on mainstream radio. In May 1942, long before the concept of rock and roll had been defined, a Billboard record review described Sister Rosetta Tharpe's vocals on the upbeat blues song "Rock Me", by Lucky Millinder, as "rock-and-roll spiritual singing". In 1939 during the April 5th broadcast on “The Fred Allen- Town Hall Tonight- Show” the song “Rock and Roll” appeared as a barber shop quartet lead-in. Various gospel, blues and swing recordings used the phrase before it became used more frequently – but still intermittently – in the late 1930s and 1940s, principally on recordings and in reviews of what became known as "rhythm and blues" music aimed at black audiences. The phrase "rocking and rolling" originally described the movement of a ship on the ocean, but it was used by the early 20th century, both to describe a spiritual fervor and as a sexual analogy. Rock and roll in turn provided the main basis for the music that, since the mid-1960s, has been generally known simply as rock music. It was also influenced by gospel, country and western, and traditional folk music. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which itself developed from earlier blues, the beat-heavy jump blues, boogie woogie, up-tempo jazz, and swing music. Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the United States in the early to mid-1950s. The origins of rock and roll are complex. For the TV program, see The History of Rock 'n' Roll. For the radio program, see The History of Rock and Roll. "History of rock and roll" redirects here. Put this in before any curriculum, especially if you’re a mom who does too much. Make sure you have adequate time allotted for yourself. In the schedule below we were out two mornings a week for a homeschool co-op and two evenings for ballet. This includes things like homeschool groups, library story hour, music lessons, swim lessons, cub scouts, and youth group. Make a list of all the extra-curricular activities your kids are involved in and jot those times down in your schedule. Put these in your schedule first so you don’t overlook your important family values. For example, you have a weekly game night on Fridays or spend Monday afternoons visiting Grandma. Fill in family routinesĪfter you’ve created a template for your schedule, fill in all your regular family routines. This schedule may be simplified to math, read aloud, writer’s workshop, and science once I get a feel for how much he can handle. I have my son’s first grade curriculum ready, but I’m fine tuning his schedule. Once you start using your schedule(s) you’ll probably tweak it as you get into your homeschool rhythm and learn what works for you. Each drawer was numbered and filled with work for different subjects each day. Do you need a five-day schedule or four-day schedule? Do you like portrait or landscape? Color or black and white? Time increments? Include weekends?īelow is schedule I made that corresponded with my daughter’s rainbow rolling cart (affiliate link). I use a Word document and play around with fonts to make it “pretty.” Your layout doesn’t have to look fancy, but it should be user friendly. Once you’ve chosen a template, design a layout that makes sense to you. The older the child, the more detailed you can make it. The younger the child, the simpler the schedule. Give your kids individual schedules that are reusable, like a checklist on a whiteboard. Make a hard copy schedule to put in notebooks and display one on the wall. Using a combination of templates works well for different purposes. Some people use purchased monthly calendars while others use bullet journals. But you may prefer to type up your own using a simple Word document. There are many free templates available on the web. To get your schedule started you’ll need to select a template. Then you’ll have more time and energy for subjects like reading and math that need to be individualized. If you are homeschooling several children, you can look for subjects, like writing, science, history, and art that you can all do together. Maybe that means using an online software for reading or buying an all-in-one curriculum package where everything is mapped out for you. I recommend choosing a variety of curriculum so that you can balance activities your kids can do independently with those that require teaching time. How much time do you have to prepare material and give direct instruction? If you choose teacher intensive programs, you have to consider how that will impact your day. Your curriculum choices can either hurt you or help you. What I want is a simple life with margin, but my packed schedule looks anything but relaxed. As time goes on I get stressed out, and then I stress my kids out. How much can you do? How much can your kids do? It’s easy for us to plan more than we can handle or need. Be realisticīefore you start filling up your schedule, be realistic. Kids change too, so what worked last year may not work this year. If you have any major life change, like moving to a new home, having another baby, or getting a job, you’ll need to make adjustments. What you design one year may change the next. If you click through one of my links and make a purchase, I will receive a commission.Ĭreating a homeschool schedule that works takes trial and error. This post contains Amazon affiliate links.
